Peniche 2018 – everything about the women only surf camp in Portugal

women only vegan surf camp Portugal

Let me start at the beginning. More than a year ago, I met Valeriya for the first time in Santa Cruz at a longboard meet-up she organized close to the beach. I really enjoyed the event and Valeriya and me clicked immediately. I liked her humble and honest way, that I find very often in people, who are into action sports. I guess, the more intense your sports is, the more relaxed you are on a daily basis. After that we met a couple more times during events in Lisbon, in Aveiro and as well during international skate day.

The idea: Organizing a surf camp

A couple of months ago – it must have been in February – she gave me a call and told me about a new project, that would connect unique experiences – such as longboard dancing and surfing – with places, that are very special to her. In this particular case she asked me, if I would participate in a surf camp, that would take place in October in Peniche. She looked for a vegan chef and for a yoga teacher – two things I am very passionate about!

My doubts about a surf camp

To be honest about surf camps and teaching or cooking there: I did it in the past and I felt, that it is not my place to be anymore. I am generally not very attracted to pub crawls, bbqs with tons of meat and hungover surf and yoga classes.

The camp Valeriya had in mind sounded different though. I am going to explain, what I really like about the project and why I am looking forward to participate in it!

And what changed my mind

  1. It is a women only surf camp! If you are a woman and you ever spent time in a “regular” surf camp, you might appreciate a women only surf camp. It is more relaxed and more intimate. Another thing about it is – speaking about women in action sports – that a lot of girls and women tend to feel intimidated in the presence of boys or men, who are competitive or more extroverted. In a women only group this pressure is a thing of the past!
  2. It is a vegan camp (dinners are vegan, breakfasts come with vegan options)! This does not mean, that everybody who joins, needs to be a vegan. But it means, that vegans and vegetarians can try food without holding back. Also it implies eating as clean and unprocessed as possible – a diet, that improves well-being as well as athletic performance.
  3. Everybody has the chance, to join surf classes, yoga classes, longboarding classes and workshops. The schedule in the camp provides a lot of free time, so that everybody can enjoy walks on the beach, read a book and relax without renouncing the yoga and surf experience.
  4. October is a great time to surf. The sea is warmer than in spring and the summer crowd is gone!

What is included in the vegan surf camp?

Actually, there are a lot of things included in one week in the surf camp! Let’s start with the basics:

Our guest have seven nights of accomondation included in their stay. The core of the camp are 5 surf lessons, that provide a great experience for every level. I will teach 4 yoga classes, that will probably take place during the traditional time (very early). Valeriya will offer two longboarding classes. No matter if our guests never set foot on a board or if they are skilled longboard dancers – there is always something new to learn!

I also plan to host two surprise workshops. I am still contemplating the possibilities. No matter, if we do guided breathing or beginner handstands – I am sure our guests will enjoy it!

Let’s play with inversions!

There are also 6 dinners included in the package. I will prepare each dinner and had the idea, to do it more like a workshop. One or two persons can help me with the preparation and I will tell them some of my secrets 🙂

Every single breakfast (not vegan, but vegan options available) is included in the price.

I really like these modalities. I think, that having a dinner and breakfast together, makes the experience more personal and gives everyone the chance, to get engaged in a good conversation over a nice dish!
